Hello PPMA members and friends

Following on from our last post by Talent Programme judge and 23/34 One To Watch Winner Sophie Coubrough, our fantastic 2024/25 One To Watch winner Clare Minzako, from Southwark Council was asked what it was like taking part in the talent programme …here’s what she told us:

I applied for the PPMA One to Watch talent programme because I saw it as a unique opportunity to challenge myself, grow professionally, and network with other people who share a passion for public service. I’ve always been driven by my goal to make a meaningful impact, especially in the area of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. This programme was the perfect opportunity to develop my skills, share and reflect on my journey so far but also gain insights from industry leaders and coaches that would help me further my contributions within local government.

Participating in the development programme has been absolutely transformative. The confidence I walked away with is totally unmatched. Knowing my story made an impact and that the coaches and judges saw potential in my future is so heartwarming. I’ve gained not only practical skills but also invaluable insights into effective leadership, the ability to think on my feet and communicate effectively in any scenario. Overall, the experience has helped me refine my ability to communicate and deliver ideas clearly and confidently. I do have to say the best part for me was connecting with a diverse group of talented professionals who shared their challenges and success stories in local government, inspiring me to continue pushing boundaries and advocating for positive change.

Winning the PPMA One to Watch award was an incredibly humbling and proud moment for me. Being chosen as the representative of such a talented and driven group of individuals is both an honour and a responsibility. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my career, but also a reminder of the importance of lifting others, learning from others and using my voice. This recognition makes me even more driven to my commitment in breaking down barriers and ensuring that young people from diverse backgrounds, like myself, have the opportunity to succeed.

To anyone considering taking part in a PPMA talent programme, I would say don’t hesitate—take the fantastic opportunity! I was definitely apprehensive at first but these programmes are designed to push you out of your comfort zone, challenge your thinking, and provide you with tools and networks that are invaluable for personal and professional growth – and it did just that. It’s an opportunity to learn from some of the best mentors, gain fresh perspectives, and make lasting connections. If you’re passionate about making a difference in public service, this is definitely an experience you won’t want to miss!

What inspires me most about working in Local Government is the ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Every decision, every initiative has a direct impact on the community. Being able to contribute to that—especially in a way that promotes inclusivity and equality—fuels my passion for public service. I’m inspired by the diverse challenges we face and the collaborative efforts required to solve them. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something bigger than myself, knowing that the work we do every day helps create a better future for everyone.

For those considering a career in Local Government, I would say it’s one of the most rewarding paths you can take. The work is challenging, never the same, and impactful. You have the chance to make a difference to entire communities and most importantly, influence meaningful change. It’s a career where you can be your authentic self and really thrive.

It’s important to highlight that my journey through both the programme and within Local Government hasn’t always been easy. Overcoming self-doubt and breaking through barriers has been a significant part of my experience. However, these challenges have only made the successes more meaningful. This award is not just a personal achievement, but also a symbol of what’s possible when you believe in yourself, stay true to who you are, and work hard towards the legacy you want to create. I hope my story inspires others to pursue their goals with confidence, knowing that their background or past does not define their future.
