PPMA HR Rising Star 2013 – Ellie Goddard's Story

Hello PPMA members and friends

Following on from the huge success of the HR Rising Star competition which reached it’s conclusion at our Annual Seminar in Bristol in April with the crowning of the winner, Ellie Goddard, we thought it would be great to hear from Ellie about her experience of the programme

Here’s a short video interview with Ellie and she tells us more:

Ellie’s also written a few words to tell us what the event has meant to her:

“The overall experience of entering Rising Stars has been amazing. The two days in Warwick provided a great opportunity not only to learn new skills but also to meet other HR professionals who all shared a passion for their big idea. Overall, the experience has been challenging and great fun too!

My big idea focussed on East Sussex County Council but could equally be applied to any local authority. Current employees form a team of representatives to promote the variety of roles carried out within the county council via the ‘East Sussex Ambassador Scheme’. Members of staff could either self nominate or be nominated to take part in the ambassador scheme which, would be promoted as a prestigious scheme to be a part of. Ambassadors would visit schools, colleges and academies to promote the variety of roles that the county council has to offer, answer questions and provide general advice on what skills and experience are needed for particular careers as well promoting the already established and growing apprenticeship scheme. Structured work experience placements would also be arranged via this scheme to provide young people with the experience they need before entering the working world.

This is such an amazing opportunity for me and so I am going to grab it with both hands and make the most of every opportunity. I am looking forward to working with the other rising stars and show casing our ideas to the PPMA.

If you are thinking of entering Rising Stars 2014 then my advice would be “do it!” I got so much out of it and of course winning was the icing on the cake. It was a great scheme to be part of it and I would definitely encourage others to take part next year.”

In case you’re not familiar with the competition, here’s a bit of background information – HR Rising Star was a new offer to PPMA members in 2013. This unique event was specifically designed to identify, nurture and enable emerging talent and future leaders of public sector HR to shine through. The intention was to engage with a broader cross section of the PPMA membership and provide an opportunity for new ideas to be shared and developed. The event was open to all PPMA members free of charge, and offered a mixture of personal development and competitive engagement over two days. The three top performers from the two days were then show cased via PPMA’s website and the overall winner selected by public vote. Thanks to the support of our partners, Manpower and the LGA, the event will be back in 2014.

Well done Ellie and what a great ambassador for the PPMA and public service. You are sure to do us proud over the year as no doubt you do in EastbSussex CC. Thinking cap on for when we talk!
    Congratulations again.

Thanks Ellie – i really enjoyed reading your first blog and remembering the great sessions at Warwick in Feb, and of course the big show at the Seminar. Well done and we are going to have some fun on the board in 13/14.

I am so pleased to have been a part of Rising Stars and to see it all come to fruition. it’s so important to celebrate the talent and passion we have in public services and to promote and try out the ideas that people come up with. I have used lots of the answers from your perception survey with the 15/16 year olds recently, and not been challenged. We all have a responsibility to do something about that, and I hope that over the next 12 months the Rising Stars cohort start to make inroads into the perception and brand of working for local government and public service in the year 2013.

As soon as we have plans and dates for Rising Stars 2014 I will let you know. We already have people registered, if you want to express an interest please email me 🙂
