So a bit about our 2018 locations. Newcastle upon Tyne is located on the northern bank of the River Tyne and is the most populous city in the North East. Together with other towns, including Gateshead, Newcastle belongs to the Tyneside conurbation, which is the eighth most populous urban area in the UK.

Incredibly, the city goes back to Roman times and was named after the castle built in 1080 by William the Conqueror’s eldest son.   From Roman times too, there has always been a population on the South Side of the river. Newcastle’s industrial heritage includes the wool trade, coal mining area, ship building and repair. Today, it’s economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres. Gateshead today makes an enormous cultural contribution to the area, whilst its history has deep roots in the mining industry.   So for all you history buffs, you’ll find some rewarding social, political, industrial and cultural history to explore if you want to.

You may also know that the Tyne Gorge, between Newcastle on the North Bank and Gateshead on the south bank, is known for its 7 beautiful and very different bridges. They include the Tyne Bridge (1928), Robert Stephenson’s High-Level Bridge (1849) – the first road/rail bridge in the world, and the magnificent (and motorised!) Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The picture to the right is my attempt at a moody iconic picture, although I’ve not captured all the bridges.

Architecturally, Newcastle is a gem and well worth exploring. Its historic heart is Grainger Town and hosts Grainger Market, Theatre Royal, Grey Street, Grey’s Monument and Grainger Street. Gateshead also has its highlights, including Baltic 39, Sage Gateshead and the Angel of the North.

I remember this region as a profoundly warm, vibrant, proud, honest but gritty place. The Quayside has totally transformed the city since I studied here many many years ago. But I think you will be as captivated as I was then and still am today.

Please do take time to look at the resources we have put on the page. We know conference is always incredible busy, but if you wanted to stay and explore I am completely confident that you will find a genuine and very warm welcome from our Geordie friends.

Our Conference Venue

Conference 2018 is being held in the magnificent Sage Gateshead. We could wax lyrical about this years venue but you can see for yourself why we are so excited by watching this short video.

You can find out much more about the venue at their website here.

Sage Gateshead is situated between both of our official hotel venues.

Gala Dinner and Main Accommodation Location

We have two official Hotels this year and we have secured block bookings at a great rate at both for PPMA delegates. They are either side of Sage Gateshead.

The main hotel is the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead at Bottle Bank. The Hotel is located between the famous Tyne and Swing Bridges.

PPMA will be hosting it’s Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony here on Thursday 19th April 2018.

Our Alternative Accommodation

The Jury’s Inn Newcastle Gateshead Quays is 1 mile from Central Station and 3 miles from the Millennium Bridge.

It’s a short walk along the banks of the Tyne to Sage Gateshead and you also walk alongside Baltic 39 which is a fantastic contemporary art gallery.
