Hello PPMA members and friends

As we approach the end of Pride Month, the final Celebrations we are sharing are from Breckland Council who have truly embraced and supported the festivities by holding a number of events throughout the month. These conclude with a ‘Wear Something Colourful Bake Sale and Bingo’ event taking place on the 2nd July

Here’s a full list of their activities and some photos taken from the events too.

We kicked off the month with our annual flag raising to celebrate Pride month.

Staff came together to take part in the Walk with Pride

Pride canvas for staff to leave messages of support throughout the month

We had an insightful Fighting with Pride, lunch and learn from John Beckett about the ‘Gay Ban’ in the armed forces and how this affected serving members.

We also have our very own Banksy, delivering a daily Pride welcome message as we enter the building

Later this week we have a Pride bingo, charity bake sale and colourful clothes day!

It’s been a fantastic and memorable month and PPMA members around the country have demonstrated their support of Pride month in many ways by Embracing Every Shade: Celebrating Diversity Together. There are still events taking place, with London Pride happening this Saturday 29th June and if you are attending, we hope that you have an amazing time.

Hello PPMA members and friends

June is Pride Month and is recognised and celebrated by people around the country. We wanted to share with you some of the ways in which our members are celebrating throughout the month. Our first post is from colleagues and PPMA members at North East & North Cumbria ICB. Despite budget restraints this year, Hamid Motraghi, Director of Health Equity and Inclusion is leading a campaign that focuses on information and education. Each week during the month they are posting regular bulletins on different elements of what Pride is, it’s impact and even some real life stories from members of staff. The post below is their ‘week 2’ communication and is about health inequalities and LGBT+ identity. It also includes an excellent description of the history and meaning of the different pride flags.

Pride Month – Week 2 Comms –Health Inequalities and LGBT+ Identity

It’s the second week of Pride Month and we would like to focus on LGBT+ Health Inequalities and Identity.

LGBT+ Health Inequalities

Within the NHS, many members of the LGBT+ community still face health inequalities and barriers to care. In addition to patients, many LGBT+ colleagues within the NHS also face discriminatory behaviour. We have shared multiple articles before on the health inequalities members of this community face, from the impacts on mental health, to access to care, to discriminatory remarks and unequal access to services and treatment,

Many of the issues faced can be placed down to either lack of knowledge, unconscious biases and systematic issues or discriminatory processes. It is how we manage bias and the work we do to further our knowledge and understanding that will improve the care we deliver and further inclusion within our services and workplaces. As such, it is important to understand that everyone’s experience is different. Our own experiences might limit our perceptions of the world around us, but it’s important to remember that our perception is not fact, that other experiences exist and are valid. With this in mind we would like to further your knowledge by exploring different facets of the LGBT+ community.

Representation

Numerous flags have been created to represent each facet of the LGBT+ community. This is because representation is important. In a community that has been historically subjected to persecution and discrimination for merely existing, it is important for diverse groups to feel safe and comfortable to express who they are. It is also important that we as health care providers are able to support individuals in feeling safe to come to us with their issues and health concerns and we tailor their care to their needs and who they are as individuals.

For this reason, the NHS rainbow badge is a great tool of indicating you are someone safe who can be approached by LGBT+ colleagues and service users. In addition, we have created a number of different resources this month utilising the Pride Progress Flag, which you can access below and use to show your support for this important cause.

The Pride Progress flag has a long history of development, first beginning with the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag in 1978.

The Gilbert Baker Pride Flag is the original Pride Flag and it was created in 1978 after Harvey Milk asked the artist Gilbert Baker to design a symbol for gay pride. Each colour represented a different part of the LGBT+ community with hot pink representing sex, red life, orange healing, yellow sunlight, green nature, turquoise magic and art, indigo serenity and violet the spirit of LGBT+ community.

Next came the Traditional Pride Flag, which was created after the assassination of Harvey Milk, with the pink stripe removed because of manufacturing issues and the turquoise removed by Gilbert Baker, the six colour pride flag has represented the LGBT+ community for over 40years and is one of the most commonly recognised and used symbols.

In 2017 the Philadelphia Pride Flag was unveiled. It was commissioned to incorporate queer communities of colour that has been overlooked by the mainstream LGBT+ movement and it included the addition of black and brown stripes to symbolise ethnically diverse groups and the contributions to the LGBT+ rights movements over the years.

Daniel Quasar then further developed the Philadelphia Pride Flag and created the Progress Pride Flag, which utilised a white, pink and light blue stripe to represent Trans Communities. While the black and brown stripes still represent ethnically diverse groups, the black stripe also represents the community lost during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 80s and 90s.

Finally, the Progress Pride Flag has further evolved to form the Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag, which was first shared in 2021 and created by Valentino Vecchietti of Intersex Equality Rights UK. It is the most up to date version of the pride flag and is seen to best represent the diverse communities and groups within the LGBT+ umbrella.

Hello PPMA members and friends

June 2023 is Pride Month and local authorites around the UK do some excellent work to recognise and celebrate Pride in their own towns, cities and regions and we wanted to share some of this work with you. Below we hear from Faizal Hakim, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Lead at Essex County Council about the innovative work they are doing not just for Pride, but focusing on the LGBGT+ community throughout the year. We also hear from Jill Parker, Assistant Director, HR and Communications at City of Doncaster Council about their Pride celebrations and the fact that Doncaster will be the host for UK Pride 2024.

Essex County Council – Quest Programme

As the national Pride month comes to a close, it is important time to think about how we continue celebrate the positive contribution the LGBTQ+ community make in all sectors of our society but also to reflect what can allyship and policy can do to enable a culture inclusion. At ECC, we are ensuring that we have real organisational honesty about where we are at with diversity, inclusion and equality, and making sure we’ve got an action plan, with clear accountability and measurable outcomes, is how we see cultural differences, equality of opportunity and fairness being embedded into everything we do.

This year our Adult Social Care services colleagues took the lead by embarking on a ‘Quest’ programme to better understand the workplace experience for staff who identify as LGBTQ+. Staying true to our ethos of organisational honesty, we allowed the questors free reign to develop as a team and engage with any part of the Council business. This included to better understand how inclusive we are in our recruitment and selection process, whether our training on EDI comprehensive enough or do we need more bespoke modules, how we work across our staff network groups to encourage greater intersectional understanding of LGBTQ+ employees. The questors developed a set of recommendations that were incorporated into our organisational wide EDI Strategy.

Over the last year the LGBTQ+ Network have:

Celebrated and educated the wider workforce during LGBTQ History month during February

Changed our flag policy by flying the Rainbow flag outside County Hall for the whole month during Pride

During Mental Health Awareness Week, a presentation focused on loneliness and isolation for LGBTQ+ people

Actively promoting and welcoming anyone from the LGBTQ+ community to become a foster carer, whether you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or another sexual identity

About to launch our allyship programme including distribution of Rainbow lanyards to be issued to individuals who describe themselves as an ally

Going forward we have set out a multiple programme of work that will embed a culture of inclusion:

Started to build a leadership capability model and create a learning and training module for our senior leaders on inclusive thinking

Started to review our current level of learning and development offer around diversity and inclusion and its effectiveness. We will be implementing cultural intelligence awareness training in 2023

Piloting reciprocal mentoring with ethnically diverse people and encouraging other areas to take forward their own mentoring programmes

Create a safe space for regular listening forums between Staff networks and the Corporate Leadership Team

Andrew Gregory , Chair of the LGBTQ+ Staff Network said: “Pride Month is of course a fantastic celebration, but it also gives us that extra motivational boost along our journey, to help make Essex even more LGBTQ+ friendly. I genuinely feel that Essex County Council as an organisation gives our LGBTQ+ Employee Network a voice and listens to our feedback. We’ve currently got a few exciting projects on the go, and I’m really looking forward to sharing these with colleagues”.

Doncaster City Council – Doncaster Pride

Here in the City of Doncaster we are celebrating Doncaster Pride on 12th August.

This is a significant annual event, organised separately through a specific events team, where we as a council help to signpost activities coordinated by Doncaster Pride, encourage volunteers to take part as well as promote and support the event from an internal workforce perspective.

The council participates in this local Pride Parade from the City Centre to Elmfield Park on the 12th August. This involves walking alongside a vehicle with an A-frame attached and all decorated. We ask for volunteers to walk with this vehicle to represent the Council’s involvement and support in Pride.

In addition, we are very proud to say that Doncaster will be the host for UK Pride 2024.
