In a world where we are all battling with short-term, immediate and often urgent workforce challenges, we need to also create space to focus on the long-term. It’s hard to do, with uncertainty as to how fast moving change will shape the future, but it’s really important to do.

Investment in learning & development, in growing our own, and in the practical aspects of our medium and long-term workforce and succession plans is really important. Of course there are risks that some people will thank us for their newly gained skills and qualifications and go elsewhere, but this risk is far outweighed by the long-term benefits we get of upskilling, developing and retaining great staff.

There is renewed and increasing focus on apprenticeships, graduate programmes and other ‘grow your own’ schemes. These are long-term investments that should sit as part of a wider recruitment and retention strategy or plan. Talent programmes delivered in the right organisational context can also help with increasing buy in and commitment from participants, and if combined with development plans, they can be powerful tools.

At the PPMA we have run talent programmes for our HR community for a number of years, and we really believe in the importance of giving people opportunities together with space to grow and develop. We’re just about to run our ONE TO WATCH (targeted at those who are in the early stages of their HR careers) and HR Rising Star (for people looking to move into a more senior role) programmes for 2023, and I’ve been privileged to work with two groups last year and to see the amount of learning and personal development and growth that took place in the space of only two days together. Our apprenticeship programme draws apprentices from all parts of local government, and finally, our Peer into the Future programme is aimed at future HR Directors. Every time we run these talent programmes, it confirms to me that the future of local government and of HR is in safe hands.

The closing date for applications for ONE TO WATCH and HR Rising Star is Thursday 15th June and you can find out more on our website.

Hello PPMA members and friends

Next Thursday, the 15th June is the closing date for applications for the HR Rising Star and ONE TO WATCH talent programmes. Taking part in these brilliant programmes is a great chance to help develop the potential skills and qualities in order to become future leaders in the Public Sector. So many past participants have gone on to achieve great things and below we’ve asked last year’s ONE TO WATCH winner Claire Kirke from Bury Council 5 questions about her experience.

Where are you currently working, what is your role and why did you want to apply?

I’m currently working at Bury Council in the role of HR Business Partner. I wanted to apply to the PPMA – ONE TO WATCH programme to help build my confidence in both my working and personal life by trying something completely brand new, pushing myself out of my comfort zone. After reading about others’ experience from attending the programme, it sounded like an amazing opportunity (which it absolutely was!) which I didn’t want to miss out on participating in.

How did you find the programme and what did you enjoy the most?

I thoroughly enjoyed the programme and would recommend it to anyone. It’s really hard to choose what I enjoyed the most because there were so many different aspects which were all equally brilliant! If I had to narrow it down, personally I loved meeting the other participants who were taking part, and carrying out the different activities with them was so beneficial. Seeing the different ways in which people worked and processed things was very influential, and definitely gave me plenty to think about. The skills and techniques learnt really are priceless and will help me so much as I progress through a career in HR.

What influence do you think the development and experience from the programme will have on your future career?

As mentioned above, the skills and techniques learnt have been so valuable and will most definitely have a positive impact on a future career in HR. The programme helped me look at things from an alternative perspective, and think about things that may not have crossed my mind before. One of the things I get nervous about is standing in front of people and presenting or talking. Part of the programme helped the participants tackle that situation in such a positive way, and Leatham’s view of ‘it’s not nervousness, it’s excitement’ will forever stick with me!

Since winning has anything happened for you and if so, what?

Whilst applying for the programme and after winning the programme, I have had full support shown from my organisation !. As my role is career graded, I feel positive that the things learnt and taken away from participating in the programme will have a real influence on helping me progress through the role.

What advice would you give to anyone who is thinking about taking part in this year’s programme?

My advice would be to 100% go for it! It’s honestly such an incredible experience from start to finish. Everyone is so lovely and supportive, and will encourage you to be the best you can be .

You can see Claire and also Neisha Porter a past HR Rising Star winner talking more about their experience in the video below.

Hello PPMA Friends

The PPMA Peer into the Future Programme reflects our passionate desire to stretch and develop HR & OD professionals and we’re looking for current or aspiring HR & OD professionals to join our next cohort which will be starting next February.

Our organisations need future oriented, forward thinking professionals – those who can both think outside the box and especially don’t see a box at all. In this way we see HR & OD people as business leaders whose expertise happens to be in workforce related matters and enables business to innovate and transform.

Peer into the Future provides participants with an opportunity to take time out from day to day business to reflect on the key business and workforce issues of the day; and share, learn and develop with colleagues. Participating will enable them to enhance personal leadership and professional skills as well as extending professional networks.

Delivered in 6 one-day modules, participants are encouraged and expected to take an active role in their learning and sharing experiences with cohort colleagues. All modules will be delivered either virtually or in locations that best suits the needs of the cohort. We will determine the finer details closer to the time reflecting the latest government and local guidance relating to COVID -19.

So if you are a current or aspiring HR & OD professional, operating strategically within your organisation or you are aspiring to operate at Director level, then this programme is for you and you can find out more information and how to apply here or contact admin@ppma.org.uk or Leatham at executivedirector@ppma.org.uk. Places are limited and the closing date for applications is Tuesday 12th January 2021.

Shawnna Gleeson, Deputy Director, HR at Manchester City Council is joint winner of this year’s programme and in the video below she explains what she got out of taking part.

We hope it inspires you and that you will join us in 2021!
