Unless we maximise the human experience, we fail to optimise human performance.

Cultural Intelligence is that secret sauce which helps people leaders to maximise the human experience. It helps us to take away the relationship conflict so we can get down to the task conflict; the good part that helps us become innovative and creative.

During her interactive 60-minute Masterclass , Ritika will:

Dive into a contextual understanding of ‘culture’. Culture isn’t just nationality it is everything that we are all and all that we embody.

Share the importance of developing this skill and how we can do that.

Introduce the Cultural Intelligence framework while contextualizing it with real world examples.

Touch upon the relevance of cultural value and the importance of being aware of them, especially to better understand team dynamics.

Share practical tips for culturally intelligent interactions.

Learning Outcomes‌

Increasing self-awareness of the impact of culture upon leading and driving change.

Recognize how cultural values manifest at work.

Apply actionable strategies for leveraging and bridging differences in teams.

Whatever it is that got us here is not enough to keep us here. Join this Masterclass to start developing this power skill required by 2026 to be successful in any context.

#PPMAHR24 is next week and to conclude our series of ‘teaser posts’ from some of our speakers, we hear from Bernadette Thompson OBE. Bernadette is a trailblazing leader in the field of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), currently serving as the Director of EDI at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and as an Associate Facilitator for the CQ Centre. With an impressive career spanning 23 years in the Civil Service, she has left an indelible mark on the inclusion landscape of various UK Government Departments and Agencies, including the Ministry of Justice, Home Office, HM Treasury, Legal Aid Agency, Cabinet Office, and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities. Below she gives us a little insight into what she will be covering in her session.

Leaders of today are faced with a shifting landscape, where traditional skills alone are no longer sufficient. In addition to the conventional leadership attributes, embracing inclusion-focused values and traits is paramount in navigating diverse corporate environments. In this volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, a high IQ alone doesn’t cut it. Leaders must possess a balanced blend of emotional intelligence and cultural intelligence to effectively lead and unite diverse teams.

During my talk, I will leverage the Deloitte framework – the six signature traits of inclusive leaders – to delve into the essential elements of fostering an inclusive culture. This session will encourage introspection among leaders, prompting them to contemplate actionable steps they can take to evolve into truly inclusive leaders. As leaders, it’s imperative to recognize the importance of cultural intelligence in bridging organizational, international, and professional cultures in the 21st century.

Expect an engaging, interactive and reflective session infused with humour as I guide PPPA conference attendees through a journey of self-discovery. I am eager to inspire attendees to explore how they can cultivate inclusivity within themselves and their leadership practices.

Bernadette’s session is on Wednesday 24th April at 15:45 to 16:30 and if you would like to join Bernadette and all of the other speakers at #PPMAHR24, then you can find out more and book here.

Hello PPMA members and friends

Another year has flown by, and it’s hard to believe that our 2024 annual conference is imminent. It’s being held at the Birmingham Conference and Events Centre on the 24th to 26th April 2024.

I’m hugely grateful to my colleagues on the PPMA board who have worked hard to put the conference together. We’re preparing to celebrate another great year, thinking about some fantastic individual and team achievements, and recognising our stars now and stars of the future.

As an association, we’ve continued to go from strength to strength, with membership increasing. We’ve tried to ensure that what we bring you throughout the year is current and topical, and also value for money. Our talent programmes have been hugely popular with record numbers of applications, and I’ve been privileged to meet and work with some fantastic individuals and groups throughout the year.

As ever, we’ve sought to ensure that at the conference, there’s a mix of inspiring and thought-provoking speakers and interactive breakout sessions, and we’ve focused on really relevant topics. We’ve got sessions on leadership, disruption, key workforce challenges, flexible working, healthy workplaces, peak performance and resilience, bad banter, the image of local government, happiness at work and AI. There should be something for everyone.

Our conference is a real opportunity to take time out from our busy and demanding day jobs – to network, to celebrate the great work and achievements over the last 12 months, and to broaden our thinking, not just regarding issues that we face now, but also how our sector and our profession are likely to change in the future.

Places at the conference are filling up, and booking details and the agenda are on the PPMA website. The Gala Dinner and Awards evening is a chance to properly acknowledge and highlight the best of our profession, and with the theme this year being ‘a night at the circus’, there’s a great chance for creativity as well as celebration!

I look forward to seeing many of you in Birmingham.

Hello PPMA members and friends

Helio Vogas is a Leadership & Motivational speaker and one of our #PPMAHR24 keynote speakers. His session on Thursday 25th April 14:00 to 15:00 is on Leadership in Crisis and below he gives us a taster of his upcoming session:

In the world of HR in the public sector, we’re all too familiar with the repercussions of poor leadership: low morale, decreased productivity, high turnover rates, and the list goes on. But what happens when these challenges are amplified during a crisis?

Most likely, we will not have another pandemic in our lifetime. However, there will always be some crisis going on. Maybe it is a cost of living crisis that affects many in your organization, or maybe it is a cultural crisis like the current Israel x Hamas war. It can also be internal matters such as a restricted budget or challenges with policies.

Imagine facing any one of these and feeling ill-equipped to navigate its complexities.

The truth is that crises are inevitable.

Whether it’s a widespread economic downturn, geopolitical tension, or internal policy challenges, sooner or later, every organization will confront adversity.

The question is: What will you do when crisis strikes?

Join me on Thursday, 25 April at the PPMA Conference as we delve into the crucial topic of leadership in crisis situations. I’ll be sharing insights and strategies to help HR professionals in the public sector not only weather the storm but emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Hint: The solution isn’t simply to stick with the status quo. Even if your organization appears to be thriving under normal circumstances, crisis demands a different approach. During my presentation, you’ll discover why and how to adapt your leadership style for maximum effectiveness when it matters most.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge and skills that can make all the difference when the next crisis inevitably arises. See you at the conference!

In order to make sure that the session is as enhanced and personal as possible for everyone, it would be great if you would complete this short survey of just 2 questions in the next week or so.

The questions are:
– What leadership challenges are you facing right now or do you feel like you will be facing soon?
– Do you have any stories you would like to share with us of a leadership challenge you solved recently, so Hélio might highlight at his session to help others that might be going through similar challenges?
Please complete the survey here

Taking part, is of course optional and all responses are strictly anonymous, but your feedback would be really helpful in making sure that this session is as tailored as possible to your specific challenges.

Hello PPMA members and friends

The time is now very close for our current President Gordon McFarlane to hand over the reigns to incoming President Pam Parkes. Last week The MJ published an article written by Gordon about his time at the helm of this great Association . You have done a fantastic job Gordon and we will definitely miss you, but are delighted that you have agreed to stay on as a board member!

Here is the article:

Next month, at the PPMA conference, my term as president ends and I will pass the baton to the new president. Ahead of that, I’d like to share some reflections on what I have learned over the past two years, as encouragement to the PPMA community and to all colleagues working across our public services, to continue the great work you are doing.

Without doubt, my proudest achievement has been to champion the people that lead and support our workforce. Public services is nothing without its people and people managers. Sometimes, the connection between good quality public services and the people that deliver them is not recognised or appreciated. We are all human, and it can be tough hearing and reading about criticism from sources who don’t necessarily understand the daily challenges our colleagues on the frontline face as they deliver services.

Against this challenging backdrop my first reflection is about the power of the PPMA community. It has been an honour to work with colleagues who are committed to sharing best practice, solutions, ideas, and support for one another. PPMA membership has grown by more than 40%, enabling us to multiply the power and reach of this support, and to increase our visibility and influence.

Second, it has been a joy to witness the impact that the PPMA’s talent development programmes have on individuals, enabling them to flourish and grow. Whether participants are early career or aspiring to operate at Director level, all benefit as much from the peer support network they develop as they do from the formal learning content. Over the years, participants have gone on to achieve great things. I always leave these events reassured that the future of HR is in good hands.

Third, there’s no blueprint to respond to the ever-evolving challenges we face. Our workforce must be creative and agile to respond to emerging technology, AI, and changes to the way we deliver services. I believe a critical strength of the HR/OD community is its willingness to share, adapt and learn from best practice. Whether that’s through PPMA webinars, newsletter, roundtables or entering for the PPMA awards, I encourage all members to contribute to this continuous exchange of learning.

Fourth, strengthening our relationships across other public sector membership bodies – West Midlands Employers, SOCITM, HPMA, UHR, CIPD – is enabling us to broaden our thinking, reach and collective power. These connections will become even more important as we embrace AI, new technology and continue to transform the way we deliver public services.

Fifth, we are delivering services in the toughest financial environment I have seen. With the current focus on cost control, we must not lose sight of the need to invest in the development of workforce. From Covid and throughout the cost-of-living crisis, our attention has rightly been focused on responding to short term emergencies. If we are to overcome the current skills and workforce shortages, we must lift our heads, look further ahead, and stand firm in our commitment to retain, develop and support staff.

Sixth, together, we have a collective responsibility to counter unwarranted, negative narrative relating to the public sector in the media. Taking time out from our busy days to promote and celebrate our successes might feel like a low priority but has such an important impact on public perception.

Finally, my sincere thanks to everyone that has supported me through my presidency, and that continues to make the PPMA community the tower of support that it is. I look forward to passing the baton to Pam Parkes, who will bring her deep insight and experience as an Executive Director, People & Transformation at Essex County Council, and Commissioner at Birmingham City Council, to champion the workforce agenda. The future of the PPMA is in safe hands.

The second in our series of ‘taster’ blog posts from some of the speakers at #PPMAHR24 is from Stella Chandler is Director at Focal Point – specialists in managing and preventing inappropriate behaviour at work. Her session, which is on Friday 26th April between 11:00 to 11:45 am, is about the effects of banter in the workplace. Below is a small taster of what she’ll be covering in her session.

I am delighted to be speaking at this year’s conference. Banter is a topic that is seldom discussed and yet regularly leads to shocking headlines about inappropriate behaviour and associated resignations

At Focal Point we conducted a survey amongst over 700 people about the effects of banter at work and the results were shocking.

97% of respondents said they had been made to feel uncomfortable by banter at some point. 40% of people said when banter was aimed at them it affected how they felt about themselves and, critically, people made to feel uncomfortable about banter felt it had impacted their ability to speak to their manager about their mental health.

These stats are bad enough, but what we hadn’t expected and what is so important for our HR community to address is that HR was highlighted as not doing enough to address banter in their organisations and in some cases, that they were actually responsible for perpetuating inappropriate banter and behaviour. Free text comments which respondents gave included

HR often make it worse

I’m not sure what HR actually do; I feel I am at risk of losing my job if I make a fuss

A senior manager did not know where to draw the line, but you couldn’t do anything because he was friends with the HR Director

While this is uncomfortable feedback for HR teams everywhere, it is vital we hold a mirror up to ourselves and ensure we get our own house in order, if we are to in any way tackle the wider issue across our organisations

I will be discussing how, as HR professionals, we can go beyond the policies and the set of values displayed on our websites, to ensure the day-to-day culture in our teams is respectful and inclusive – while still maintaining the fun. And critically that we are role modelling within our own teams.

While this is not an easy area to navigate, it is possible to bring clarity through discussion and use of practical tools, to keep banter the right side of the line.

I look forward to seeing you
