The 26 January 2017 saw the PPMA host one of its National programme events in the London/ South & South East regions at the offices of London Councils.

The meeting was well attended by over 25 HR professionals.

There were a variety of speakers and subject matters covered. The agenda for the event is on the site together with many of the presentations from the day.

Dates of 2016 meetings:

PPMA London/ South & SE Regional Meeting – Friday 21 October 2016

This was another well attended event with around 25 members in attendance, and our President Sue Evans also came along.

Speakers covered the subjects of�HR using social media better,�employee engagement and personal responsibility�and the ins and outs of�non exec director roles.

Olivia Vines and Neel Patel of jobsgopublic provided a very informative presentation on the utilisation of Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, et al in the use of recruitment and employer promotion/ branding –�click here to download the presentation.

Alex Taskin from Passe-partout consulting and Tricia Palmer from TiPi Consulting gave a presentation creating workplace settings to better engage employees, provide better learning experiences and help develop the kind of thinking and problem solving capacity normally seen as the province of leaders and managers –�click here to download the presentation.

And finally Susannah Clements who has 30 years experience in HR as a consultant, HRD and Group HRD for large complex organisations such as Orange & Care UK, before becoming Deputy Chief Exec of the CIPD. She now runs Ferry Path Partners an Executive Search firm and gave an informative briefing session of tips and hints about Non Executive Director roles and where to start and how to prepare.

London Region Chair

Our last joint regional event took place on 13 May. We were pleased to welcome Trudy Birtwell, Head of Leadership and Organisational Development, Solace Group, who made a presentation on a view of the local government landscape and the implications for public sector leadership, followed by a discussion on the 21st century public servant work being taken forward by Solace, the LGA and PPMA in conjunction with the University of Birmingham.

Our last joint regional event took place on 12 February on the theme of Commerciality and Skills for the current and future public sector workforce. We were pleased to welcome the following speakers who provided a range of interesting and informative perspectives on their different approaches and experiences:

Allison Davies, Senior HR Manager, Acivico Ltd

Acivico Ltd is a company created by Birmingham City Council to offer a range of services to the council and other public and private sector organisations in construction and property related services including a complete building control service and facilities management.

Caroline Nugent, Director of HR & OD at OneSource

OneSource is built on a successful partnership between two London boroughs – Havering and Newham. The two councils have brought together 22 back office services, with 1350 staff to achieve an estimated £40m in savings over the next five years – around 20% of their current back office.

Craig Cusack, Commercial Enterprise Lead, Warwickshire County Council

Warwickshire County Council have developed and have been utilising a new competency framework based around the commercial skills needed to operate within a traded service or more widely in an increasingly commercial public sector environment.

The PPMA national programme event for the South-East, Southern and London regions took place on the 11thof December. This is one of a number of regional events being organised by the Policy Board as a follow-up to the 2015 Annual Seminar held in Bristol, with the theme of “Past, Present and Future”. A number of sponsors presented at the event helping to promote inclusion for those who were not able to attend the seminar, and to increase exposure and interaction between PPMA members and sponsors.

Our last joint regional event took place on Friday 6 November and included a presentation from Dr Suja Chacko, Partner, Strategic Links LLP, & Anne-Louise Clark, Head of Organisational Development and Internal Communications, London Borough of Bexley, looking at new research findings on the role and impact of a strong HRM climate. There was also an Employment Law update from Stuart Chamberlain, Croner.

Our last joint regional event took place on Friday 18 September and included presentations from Lisa Gill, with a discussion on the latest thinking on organisation design, and Emma Stewart from Timewise about the work being undertaken with local authorities on flexible working, hiring and commissioning (this work is being jointly sponsored by the LGA and the Government Equalities Office). Our last joint regional event took place on 12 June and was kindly hosted by Penna. Penna presented the findings from their research on talent issues, as well as on attraction and employer value techniques and solutions, including the role of social media and gamification. Thank you for attending the Joint London and Southern & South East Regions PPMA Meeting on Friday 30 January 2015.

We had a useful meeting with presentations from SOLACE colleagues on the theme of Leadership.

Graeme McDonald, Director of SOLACE explored the potential landscape and future for local government following the general election in May 2015.

This was followed by a presentation by Terry McDougall, Director of Solace in Business exploring the skills needed to lead in the operating environment of local government, now and in the future.

Their thought provoking and informative presentations are attached.

Terry also agreed to share with us a joint SOLACE and LGA report on the leadership skills that local authority chief executives need in transforming local government, titled - Asking the right questions.

We plan to hold our next regional PPMA meeting on Friday 8 May.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the PPMA conference in Bristol on 16/17 April.

Our last joint regional event took place on 27 June and focussed on the challenges of attracting and recruiting talent into our organisations, particularly in relation to Social Workers and to young people. Presentations on this theme were made by TMP (who kindly sponsored the meeting) and Manpower and we also heard from two of the PPMA’s Rising Stars on ideas to increase workforce agility. Our next event is being planned for late September/early October and further details will be available in due course.

Our last meeting took place on 7 February, at which we were pleased to welcome Stuart Chamberlain and Pat Mackereth from Croner. Stuart gave a very interesting and informative presentation on recent and current employment law developments, and Pat spoke about the Croner’s products and services and the offering for PPMA members. Sarah Messenger, from the LGA, then led a stimulating debate on the current employment relations climate in local government, following which we heard from Richard Crouch, PPMA President.

2013 Regional meetings

Our last joint regional event with Southern & South East Region took place on 18 October. Wendy Hirsh from the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), spoke about The Business-Workforce Dialogue, a Toolkit, developed jointly by PPMA and IES,for HR professionals to use to support the shaping of future public services and the future workforce.

There was also a presentation on the theme of “collaborative working”, led by one of our Regional members, Richard Wood, Director of HR & Business Services, Touchstone Renard Limited, and Eirian Lewis, Director of Teal Consulting. This provided a taster session to heighten awareness of ‘collaboration’ in the workplace covering what it means, the drivers for, key principles of, essential leadership and other skills for and barriers to effective collaboration.

Our last regional meeting took place on 28 June. The meeting focussed on work that PPMA has been undertaking with Pricewaterhouse Coopers on the future public sector workforce and the implications for the HR function. The event on 15 March 2013 was kindly hosted by the MJ and was held at the offices of London Councils. The main theme was the recent CIPD report Leading Culture Change - Employee Engagement and Public Service Transformation which was produced in collaboration with the PPMA and on which Ben Wilmott, one of the CIPD co-authors made a presentation on the report’s main findings.

2012 Regional Meetings

Our last Regional event took place on 5 October and was kindly hosted by Mercer. This was another joint event with the Southern & South East Region. The theme was public sector pay and reward, with presentations by Daniel Hibbert, Principal, Mercer, Colin Miller, Reward Manager, Kent County Council and Louise Tibbert, Head of HR & OD at Hertfordshire County Council and PPMA Lead Officer for Pay and Reward. As well as stimulating a range of interesting debate, there was an opportunity for members to provide Louise with feedback on what they would welcome/value from PPMA on pay and reward matters. We also heard from Martin Rayson, this year’s PPMA President, on the PPMA Business Plan and future direction of the Association, another opportunity to provide feedback on these issues.
