From sick note to fit note: new guidance for employers is published

A recent update on this site covered the introduction of the new “fit note” system which will come into force from 6 April this year. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has now published further guidance for employers which sets out the changes to the form itself and the effect of these changes on organisations and their workforce. It has been produced in partnership with the CIPD, Acas, the CBI and other business groups.

The new fit note is intended to allow doctors to provide more information on an employee’s condition and how they might be able to return to work, for example, by:
• a phased return to work;
• altered hours;
• amended duties; and/or
• workplace adaptations.

The guidance includes a sample and more detailed description of the new form and examples of how it may be used. It also includes a flow-chart for employers and Frequently Asked Questions on a range of issues, as well as where to go for more information and support.

Separately, the TUC has produced guidance for union representatives on preparing for the new “fit note”.

Public sector employers may find it helpful to refer to these guidance documents in preparing for the introduction of the new system and in making any changes to their absence management and other related policies and procedures.
