Guidance published on employees’ right to request training
The government has confirmed that the right of employees of larger organisations (those with more than 250 employees) to request training will be introduced from 6 April 2010. The new right is pursuant to new sections 63D to 63J, 47F and 104E introduced into the Employment Rights Act 1996 by the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009.
At the same time, it has published a guide to the new right, which is available on the Business Link website at: www.businesslink.gov.uk
Whilst this new right is not expected to have a great deal of impact in the local authority sector, local government employees will be able to exercise it if they wish, and it would be prudent for employers ot have a procedure in place for any request which do arise.
The right will be extended to employees in smaller organisations in April 2011.
