Annual Report 2009

Well-being is a fast emerging topic which is on everyone’s lips. A recent survey indicated that most of the FTSE 100 companies would have adopted a wellbeing or wellness strategy for their employees by 2010.

So what is wellbeing? For some people it is all about absence management – making efficiencies by reducing the cost of sickness absence. For others it is a return to the welfare role – caring for employees by providing employee assistance programmes and other initiatives.

In truth wellbeing is much more than either of these approaches. Although effective management of sickness is important, it is looking at the wrong end of the telescope – instead of worrying about the 5% of employees who are absent, we should be concentrating on the 95% of employees who are at work, but not necessarily reaching their potential.

Wellbeing is not about a welfare or nanny state –it is concerned with giving employees the knowledge and tools to take control of their own health and quality of life. By empowering employees to make the most out of every day – at home and at work – the improvements to performance can be immense.

PPMA is working with Wellkom and The Work Foundation to develop and promote the wellness equation – Well People + Well Managed = Well Organisation.

One aspect of this is the development of personal wellness profiles for employees to complete as the first stage of learning to manage their own wellbeing.

Other ideas being developed are learning modules for HR professionals and managers to find out more about how the human body works, the benefits of a healthy environment, and how to organise the workforce to optimise health and performance.

There are great initiatives taking place up and down the country, and part of PPMA’s role is to publicise best practice, for example through the HR awards, and to build a network of HR professionals committed to promoting well-being.
